Designer Dogs

By Summer High

Skylar slowly reaches around the closet door and snaps a photo with her google app. Checking the search results, she exclaims, “Dragon, mythological creature?!?! Siri, call Heather!”

“Heather, you’ve got to come over!” Skylar pleads. “There’s a dragon in my closet!”

“Is this a prank call?”

“I’m serious!” Skyler launches into an explanation, “I was walking home from school when I saw a small fire in the alley behind my building, so I stomped it out. I was about to leave when this little dog peeked out from behind the dumpster. He was dirty, covered with eggshells, and didn’t have a collar, so I put him in my purse.”

“You stole him?”

“I rescued him! But when I got him home on my bed, he sneezed and burned a hole in my bedspread! So I screamed, and he jumped off the bed and ran and hid in my closet. Then he started sneezing a TON, and soon my cat runs out all singed!”

“You know there’s no such thing as dragons, right?”

“Tell that to my closet!”

A high-pitched “achoo!” emanates from the closet.

Skyler looks in to survey the damage. “Not my favorite sweater — Heather, you’ve got to come over! It’s a fashion EMERGENCY!”

“To help you get rid of a mythological creature? Did you take one of those blue pills they warned us about in health class?”

“No!!! I need you to help me get out of this mess! Please!”

“Okay,” Heather succumbs. Thinking out loud, she asks, “if I had a dragon in my closet, how would I get it out?”

Skyler suddenly grabs for her purse and digs out a Snickers bar. “I got it. Food!”

Skyler frantically unwraps the candy and lures the dragon out of the closet.  The creature approaches with caution and begins chewing.

Skyler scoops it up in her arms.

“Ohmigod, it worked! What do I do now?”

“Throw it out the window!”

“I’m on the eleventh floor!”

“Can’t dragons fly?” Heather launches into one of her famous rants. “You know we need to talk about this obsession of yours with small dogs…”

As Heather drones on, the room darkens.

Skyler looks towards the window where a giant eyeball is peering into the room.

Skyler looks down at the dragon in her arms, and then back up at the window. Cautiously, she places the small dragon in the open window. As the eye pulls away, the head of a full-grown dragon is revealed. Gently, the massive dragon opens its jaw and picks up its baby by the scruff of its neck.

Taking one last look through Skylar’s window, the dragon flies off into the sunset.

Skyler stares.

“Heather… I gotta go.”
